Pretty In Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is why we are all decked out in our pink. We want to really be a part of it this year. And we hope to inspire you to be a part of it too. I don’t think there is a family out there that hasn’t been touched by cancer in some way. 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. In 2010, 207000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in women, and over 1900 in men. In 2010, there are over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors!! The survivor rate is going up every year. By clicking  on this link every day, you can help. The sponsors of the site  pay for mammograms. So go click it!! Do it now. We’ll wait….
We, along with Jimmy Boyett’s State Farm , Adam & Eve Hair Salon and Debbie Sorensen with Avon, want to help our local cancer centers in Athens. For the month of October, we want you to bring donations for these centers to our office in Colbert. We have a little goody bag with a couple of State Farm items and a couple of Avon items for everyone that brings a donation to our office. Also, each of you will be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to Adam & Eve Hair Salon on Atlanta Hwy. The address to the office is 6378 Hwy 72W Colbert, GA 30628. We are between the Dollar General and Fred’s.
We need donations of soft, washable scarves, hats and turbans, and blankets to help ward off the chill in the centers. One of the centers has been out of turbans for 3 months! And while that may have been ok in the summer, the weather is cooling off and they will be needed.  Some of the treatments make the hands very sensitive to cold and they can barely hold drinks, so gloves and koozies would be great. The treatments also make skin very dry and they go thru A LOT of lotion.   You can get the little bottles sometimes for 50 cents at Bath and Body works and Avon has a lot of small tubes of lotions for pretty cheap, too. Lip balm is also a great thing to give. The treatments really dry out the lips and I know I can’t stand for my lips to be dry!  One center said that the ladies love anything that still makes them feel pretty, even when they feel crappy. They love brooches and pins and bracelets and earrings. They like to keep books and crossword puzzles and word finds around too. You have to sit there for hours to get chemo and these things help pass the time. And if you want to donate money or time, that’s great, too!
We don’t want our out of state friends to feel left out!! Most major cities have at least one cancer center. You can gather up things from your friends and neighbors, too, and take them to your local center. If you do, take pictures and email them to us and we’ll put them up on the blog. Or you can post them directly to our Facebook page. We’d love to see what others are doing!
We are super excited about this and we really want to make this a big community project. We can’t do it without you. So please help us help these centers!!  We can all be Good Neighbors!!

  3. Big nose? Seriously? No one evens notices because they can't get past how great you always look!!

And Joy, gray hair makes you look distinguished---think George Clooney and Lauren Bacall. :)

PS: I'm gonna whip up some cute little koozies with embroidered pink ribbons on them. Lise--let me know if you're coming my way or into Athens and I'll meet you some time. :)

Lauren Bacall? I like it! Actually, my dream is to have Emmy Lou Harris' hair. I'll have to grow it out though.
